The City of Roanoke Rapids was born and bred on the banks of the Roanoke River, so the fish in the window at city hall seems right at home.
Roanoke Rapids is governed by an elected city council and mayor, whose directives are overseen by City Manager, Joe Scherer and his staff. The work of the city is carried out by 143 full time employees in nine departments. Members of the city council include Mayor Emery Doughtie, Mayor Pro Tem Carl Ferebee, along with Carol Cowen, Suetta Scarborough, Ernest Bobbitt and Wayne Smith.
Roanoke Rapids boasts a Main Street designation and in that effort issued the following support statement: The City is committed to bringing the resources of the City together to maintain, enhance and promote the Roanoke Avenue district as the social, cultural and spiritual center of Roanoke Rapids through economic development.
