Annual American Indian Heritage Month Celebration at HCC

November 1, 2019 12:00 pm-2:00 pm

Weldon, NC

Join us for a celebration of American Indians and their contributions to our society. Members of the Haliwa-Saponi tribe will be on hand to demonstrate ceremonial dances and rituals. In addition, they will be dressed in traditional Haliwa attire.

The keynote speaker this year is Chief Ogletree Richardson, the chief of the Haliwa-Saponi tribe. Richardson is the first woman to serve as chief of the tribe. She is a native of Hollister, NC, and a graduate of the Haliwa Indian School. She went on to earn degrees from Nash Community College and North Carolina Wesleyan, then earned a master's degree in educational administration, an educational specialist degree, and a doctoral degree in educational administration.

The Haliwa-Saponi tribe gained recognition from the state of North Carolina on April 15, 1965. Since then, they hold the annual Powwow in April each year to commemorate the distinction. The tribe has approximately 4300 active members, with 2700 living in the close knit tribal community in Hollister, NC. The event is FREE and open to the public.
