William Richardson Davie lived in Halifax from 1785-1805 and made exceptional and significant contributions as a soldier, statesman, and founder of the first state university, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Not only did Davie introduce the bill in the state legislature that chartered the university, but also he secured the first endowment, served on the board of trustees, laid the cornerstone in the initial building, supervised early construction, hired teachers, drafted curriculum, and selected the site. His home, which still stands within the historic district, is undergoing an interior renovation by the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources thanks to a gift from a late resident.
