On Friday, an event will take place in Historic Halifax that has not likely occurred there in 150 years. A mortise and tenon-constructed kitchen outbuilding will be assembled in the backyard of the Bradford-Denton House.
Construction costs have been funded by descendants of Col. John Bradford and the Halifax County Convention and Visitors Bureau. John Bradford was a Halifax County delegate to the 4th Provincial Congress that met in Halifax in the spring of 1776, during which North Carolina delegates issued a call for independence now known as the Halifax Resolves. His restored ca. 1760 gambrel roof house stands just feet in front of the colonial-era kitchen that is now under construction. Once completed, the Revolutionary War period kitchen will be the site of colonial hearth fireplace cooking demonstrations.
The public is welcome to come out and be witness to this seldom-seen timber frame construction that will be secured together with wooden pegs.
The Bradford-Denton House property consists of the house and outbuildings of the colonial period, which is a project of the Historical Halifax Restoration Association, Inc.
