HHRA will host the unveiling of a Lafayette Trail marker at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 16, 2025, at the Willie Jones “Grove” Plantation site on Owens Road, just west of Halifax. (Turn left immediately after crossing the railroad from Halifax.) The sign was presented to HHRA by The Lafayette Trail, Inc., a non-profit that is locating highway markers memorializing Lafayette’s tour of the eastern United States in 1824-1825.
It is well documented that Lafayette visited there in February 1825, and we suspect he stopped there when he first came to America before he met Washington. This project is underwritten by the Pomeroy Foundation. Julien Icher, President of that corporation, from Bethesda, Maryland, will be making the presentation. Weather permitting, we hope to offer the opportunity for visitors to cross the field and be able to see some of the ruins of the house. Afterward, we will convene at The Bradford-Denton House (106 St. David St.) to see and learn about new additions and enjoy refreshments.
