A presentation by Hank Parfitt.
As a young person, Lafayette came to America and supported the cause for American Independence during the Revolutionary War, serving under George Washington. Without the assistance of France, the outcome may have been different. Did you know that he was an outspoken advocate of religious toleration and the abolition of the slave trade? Back in France, Thomas Jefferson helped him draft the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen which was adopted by the French Assembly after some revisions. Jefferson offered to make Lafayette the governor of the newly acquired Louisiana Territory but he declined. President James Monroe invited Lafayette to visit the United States in 2024/5 and this Farewell Tour is being reenacted.
