Come celebrate the arrival of our Nation’s Guest, the Marquis de Lafayette, as he is received in the birthplace of independence. Halifax was where the Halifax Resolves and the first NC Constitution were ratified and was an important part of the revolution that General Lafayette participated in to secure our independence. In 1824, President James Monroe invited the Marquis de Lafayette to visit the United States on a “Farewell Tour” in preparation for the 50th Anniversary of Independence. At the time, Lafayette was the last surviving major general from the Revolutionary War.
Historic Halifax State Historic Site will offer a free event starting at 1 PM. Lafayette will arrive by horse-drawn carriage at 5:00 PM, with sounds of cannon fire and the ringing of bells, and travel to Eagle Tavern where he will be welcomed. Then, he'll proceed to dinner at The Hen and Hog Restaurant.
The dinner will be a ticketed event with an admission fee. The evening event will reenact the hospitality of the citizens of Halifax in their gratitude to Lafayette with the original thirteen toasts given to him in Halifax on this date, 200 years ago. Tickets are limited to 100 guests.
