Students in Schools Across Halifax County Celebrate North Carolina’s Largest Birthday Party for America’s 250th

Halifax County, NC — On March 12, 2026, Halifax County students will come together for North Carolina’s Largest Birthday Party, a countywide celebration honoring America’s upcoming 250th birthday.

“It’s a fun opportunity for our school community to show their pride by wearing red, white, and blue while also reflecting on the history and values that bring us together”, said Mandy Clark, Public & Student Information Officer. “We’re grateful to Visit Halifax and the Halifax County Semi-Quincentennial Commission for their work on this event and for helping make the day even more special with a sweet treat for our students”.

More than 6,500 students across schools in Halifax County will participate in the celebration, which will feature festive balloon towers, sweet treats for students, and a special celebration video highlighting Halifax County’s unique role in America’s founding.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to celebrate both our nation’s history and the important role Halifax County played in America’s story,” said Dr. Eric Cunningham, Superintendent of Halifax County Schools. “Learning that the first call for independence happened right here in their community helps students understand that history isn’t just something in a textbook — it’s something they are part of.”

The event is designed to help young people understand and take pride in the history that happened in their own backyard. Nearly 250 years ago, on April 12, 1776, leaders meeting in Halifax adopted the Halifax Resolves, the first official action by an entire colony calling for independence from Great Britain. That historic moment helped lead to the creation of the Declaration of Independence.

“Tomorrow’s celebration is about inspiring our students to understand the important role Halifax County played in the founding of our nation,” said Muzette Kiger, Chairperson of the Halifax County Semi-Quincentennial Commission Events Committee. “We want them to feel proud that the call for independence began right here in Halifax County.”

The birthday celebration is part of the broader America 250 Halifax County Celebration, a multi-year effort to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Halifax Resolves and America’s founding. Community celebrations and major events are scheduled April 10–12, 2026, in Historic Halifax, where visitors from across North Carolina and the nation are expected to gather.
