Situated on the fall line, a granite shelf where the elevation changes more than 100 feet over a nine-mile span, which is what creates the rapids at Weldon, N.C., sits the beautiful Roanoke River. The rushing water creates the perfect spot for adventure seekers, but also for those trying to catch some fun with striped bass or rockfish. Paddlers, including canoes, kayaks, row boats and, believe it or not, paddle boards, enjoy the annual Roanoke River Ramble, a nine-mile paddle from Weldon to Halifax that is held on the first Saturday in November each year. Check in and drop off your canoe/kayak, then drive to the take-out in Halifax. Once there, park your vehicle and take the complimentary shuttle back to the launch. After visiting Halifax, you will agree there is no better way to see North Carolina’s beauty than as reflected in the waters of the mighty Roanoke River.
